Virus Hoax: Jdbgmgr.exe Last reviewed on Monday, 21-Oct-2002 09:12:07 EDT

Virus Hoax:  Jdbgmgr.exe (the "teddy bear" icon)

A virus hoax is a false warning about a non-existent virus sent via email and forwarded to others by well-meaning individuals.  A virus hoax about the jdbgmgr.exe file (which has a small teddy bear as an icon) on Windows computers has been sent to numerous members of the university.  This file is NOT a virus:  it is a legitamate, harmless file for debugging Java applets that works with Internet Explorer.  If you receive this hoax via email, do not listen to its instructions and please do not forward it on to anyone else.

For more information about this particular hoax, please visit:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html

This is only one of many virus hoaxes that exist.  The best way to insure that you are not fooled by a virus hoax is to verify the warning by checking with an anti-virus website, such as our Virus Notification Program or the websites of anti-virus vendors like McAfee and Symantec.  One great place to check to see if the warning is a hoax is Symantec's virus hoax webpage which lists all known hoaxes at:

If you already deleted the jdbgmgr.exe file from your system, do not panic.  Most modern versions of Windows will actually restore the file automatically, and the file is not critical to the operation of your computer (in other words, there is no reason to worry if you cannot restore the file). If, however, you have managed to permanently delete the file and you want to obtain a new copy of the file, please consult the following Microsoft page for the options available to you:
