OIT Virus Notification Program
"How can I receive warnings about new computer
viruses at the university?"
You can receive alerts about new computer viruses that may be a threat to
you and the rest of the university community by subscribing to the
umd-vnp mailing list. To sign up, type in your email
address in the box below (example: johndoe@wam.umd.edu) and hit the
Sign Up button:
This mailing list is dedicated
to informing the university community about new computer viruses and new
anti-virus software information. Only members of the Virus Notification
Program can send out information to the list, so you will never receive
any random email messages from other members of the list.
If you successfully subscribed to the list, you should receive an email
from Listserv (Listserv is the computer program that now handles this
mailing list) asking you to confirm your wish to be added to the
list--simply follow the instructions in the message to confirm that
you want to join the list. From that point on,
you will receive alerts and information about computer viruses at the
email address you subscribed with.
If you ever wish to UNSUBSCRIBE to the list, send an email
message to listserv@listserv.umd.edu from the
email account where you receive the emailed alerts. Leave the
subject line blank and in the text of the message, type
unsub umd-vnp. Remove any other text from the body
of the message and then send the email.
Note: Virus alerts are also sent out via
the FYI mailing list, a mailing list
that university faculty and staff are usually subscribed to automatically,
but FYI only comes out once a day, so the alert may appear in the FYI
message a day or two after the alert was sent to
umd-vnp.
