These instructions pertain to the Compact Flash Type II Symbol Wireless Card. These instructions can be used as a guide, but are not guaranteed to work for other CF Type II wireless cards. Before you begin, make sure your Pocket PC is running Pocket PC 2002 or higher. In addition, you will also need the wireless card, and the software installation CD.

First, make sure your Pocket PC is on the cradle, or if you have a sync cable, make sure it is attached. Second, make sure you have installed Microsoft Active Sync 3.5 or higher. Last, insert the software installation CD for the wireless card into the computer that controls the partnership of your Pocket PC. When the installation screen appears, click on the link for installing software for Pocket PC.
NOTE: DO NOT insert the wireless card into the Pocket PC.

The file download window appears asking if you would like to open or save the file to your computer. Click Open and proceed to the next step.

Some software installations may come with a license agreement, and some may not. In case there is a license agreement, click Yes to proceed with the installation of the software.

This window appears after the software has been successfully loaded onto your computer. Click Yes to install the drivers and configuration tools onto your Pocket PC.

This window is showing the status of the installation. Keep an eye on your Pocket PC. You should see a screen similar to this. If you do not see this screen it is ok, a window will pop-up on your desktop computer alerting you when the installation process is complete.

With the installation process complete, you may now insert your wireless card. Once the card is inserted, an icon with a network card and a meter appears in the bottom right hand corner. Click this icon to open the properties of the card. The first setting that you will need to change is the ESSID:. This should be changed to UMD. The Operating Mode: should be set on Infrastructure by default. If this mode is something other than infrastructure, click the drop down arrow and select infrastructure. Click Apply and select the IP Config tab.
Note: If you do not see an icon in the bottom right hand corner for your wireless configuration utility, then click on Start, Programs and look for something with the name wireless utility. If you do not see a wireless icon under programs, click Start, Settings and look for this icon here.

With the IP Config tab opened, write down or make note of the MAC Address:. You will need this MAC Address to register your wireless card on the University Network Registration page. Click Register Now!! if you have not already registered. After you have successfully registered your wireless card, proceed to step 8.

Assuming that you are near a wireless access point, open your configuration utility and check your signal tab or status monitor to see if you have good signal quality. If you have good signal quality, turn your Pocket PC off and wait for about 2 minutes and turn it back on. If you do not have good signal quality, then relocate until your signal is stronger.

With your Pocket PC powered back on, click Start, and select Settings.

Click on the Connections tab and Open the Connections icon.

Make sure the first choice under connections displays Internet Settings. Second, make sure the second choice displays Work Settings. If these categories do not show these settings, click the drop down arrow and select them.

Lastly, Make sure this third category displays The Internet. By default this setting is set to Work, but you must manually click the drop down arrow and select The Internet. When your screen looks exactly like this one, you can click OK in the upper right hand corner. Click ok or close all windows until you are back to the Today Screen.

Click Start, and select Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer will open to the pre-loaded home page. Click View and select Address Bar.

With the address bar opened, click the keyboard icon on the bottom right hand corner. Use this keyboard to enter in a web address.

Once you have entered in the web address, click the little green, curved arrow to activate the web search. Wait a couple seconds and the page will appear. At this point, your wireless is configured and ready to use with the University's Wireless Network.
