Some newer computers, most notably Gateway Computers, come
with a Promise Ultra/66 Controller card that is not yet
supported by any of the linux distributions. The following
steps will help you set up your system to work with this
controller card. To follow these instructions, you will need
to have access to a Windows Computer with an Unzip program
installed, as well as a blank, formatted floppy diskette.
-
You will first need to download the zip file of controller
drivers by clicking
here.
-
When prompted by your computer to either Save it to
disk or Open it, you should
select Open it. You will now see the list
of files that were contained in the zip package, as shown
below:
-
You should then click on Extract, and save
the files to a folder on your hard drive. You then will
need to open up Windows Explorer, and
navigate to the directory that you just extracted the files
to.
-
You will now need to double click on the
rawrite executable program that is in that folder.
-
You should now place the blank, formatted diskette into the
disk drive.
You will see a dos prompt window pop up,
which will be prompting you for the name of the image
file.
You need to type u66boot.img at this
prompt and hit enter.
You then need to type "a" to specify the
floppy drive, and hit enter again.
The image will now be written to the floppy disk.
-
Now that you have the boot disk ready, you
can proceed to the installation. You will probably want to
print out the directions that are provided in the zip
package. You can do this by
double-clicking the file entitled
U66linux.txt. This will open the text file in
Notepad, at which point you can print it
to your local computer.
-
You should now follow the directions that you printed out
from the text file.
