Using Secure Socket Layer to Check E-mail with Outlook 5

SSL only works with Outlook Express version 5. This is the version that comes with Internet Explorer version 5. SSL will not work with earlier of Outlook Express or with Outlook.

  1. Use Internet Explorer to get a certificate for the University of Maryland. Go to the University of Maryland Certification Authority
  2. Click Load into Internet Explorer
  3. Click Open this file from its current location then OK

  4. Click Next

  5. Continue clicking Next until it asks Do you want to ADD the following certificate to the Root Store. Click Yes then OK

  6. Now open Outlook Express 5
  7. Click on Tools then Accounts
  8. Click the Mail tab, click on your mail account, click Properties

  9. Click the Advanced tab
  10. Click in the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Do NOT check this box under Outgoing mail (SMTP). If you get the error message when sending mail - unable to connect to the SMTP server, follow these instructions

  11. Click the IMAP tab
  12. Type ~/mail in the Root folder path
  13. Type sent-mail in the Sent Items path

  14. Click Apply then OK. Click Close in the Internet Accounts window
  15. If you are connected to the Internet then when it asks Would you like to down-load folders from the mail server you added, click Yes. If not, click No and wait until you are connected.
