Secure Connection Setup for Outlook 2000

This web page will guide you through setting up Outlook 2000 so that you can use it to send and receive e-mail This page will show how to set up a secure connection for both IMAP and POP3 settings. To set up the Secure Connection in this version, do the following:

IMAP

  1. Open Outlook Mail
  2. Click Tools from the Microsoft Outlook menubar and select Accounts

  3. Click on the server ("mail.umd.edu" in this example) to select it
  4. Click on the Properties button
  5. Click to select the Servers tab in the Properties window
  6. If you use mail.umd.edu as an outgoing mail server, in the Outgoing Mail Server section click to select the checkbox for My server requires authentication.
    NOTE: This should be un-checked for WAM, Glue, and Deans.

    IMAP Servers

  7. Click to select the Advanced tab in the Properties window
  8. Under Server Port Numbers you will see:
    • If you use mail.umd.edu in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) - click the checkbox to select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
      NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.
    • Incoming mail (IMAP) - click the checkbox to select This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
    • Do not change the default port numbers.

  9. Click the Apply button to accept the changes
  10. Click OK to exit the Properties window
  11. Click OK to close the Internet Accounts window

POP3

  1. Open Outlook mail
  2. Click Tools from the Microsoft Outlook menubar and select Services
  3. Click to select the Services tab
  4. Click the Internet E-mail - Mail in the information services window
  5. Click the Properties button

  6. On the Properties window click the Servers Tab
  7. If you use mail.umd.edu as an outgoing mail server, click the checkbox for My server requires authentication.
    NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue and Deans.

  8. Click on the Advanced tab
  9. Under Server Port Numbers you will see Outgoing mail (SMTP). If you use mail.umd.edu, Click the checkbox to select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.
  10. Under Server Port Numbers you will see Incoming mail (POP3). Click the checkbox to select This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
    Do not change the default port numbers.

  11. Click the Apply button to set the changes
  12. Click the OK button to return to the Services Window
  13. Click the OK button to exit the email process
