Keep All Disks That Come With Your Computer

Keep all disks, CDs, and documentation that come with your computer and software in a safe place - especially your Windows or Mac OS CD

Store all invoices, part lists, and CDs that come with the computer in a safe place (away from dust or magnets) where you can easily find them if they are needed for troubleshooting. These disks are always needed to resolve most issues in Windows, such as when you have difficulty connecting to the campus network. This is the case whether you are seeking assistance from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk or an independent repair shop.

Most brandname computers ship with some type of "restore" CD, which contains a utility that will restore your PC to its original state (as it was when you initially purchased it). This is a great utility if you need to re-format your PC, however, reformatting is usually a last resort for most problems. Furthermore, this utility is not appropriate for resolving all problems which require files to be copied from the original operating system software. Therefore, you need to have the actual Windows or Mac OS CD that was shipped with your computer. If the system you purchased did not include these CDs, you should contact the manufacturer and request the appropriate operating system.
