Securing Email connections in Outlook Express

Secure Connection Setup for Outlook Express 6.x

This web page will guide you through setting up Outlook Express 6.x so that you can use it securely to send and receive e-mail. Open Outlook Express and do the following:

  1. In the Outlook Express menus, click on the Tools menu and select Accounts

  2. Click to select the Mail tab
  3. Highlight your mail account name (in this case "mail.umd.edu")
  4. Click to select the Properties button

  5. In the Properties window, click on the Servers tab
  6. In the Outgoing Mail Server section at the bottom, if your outgoing mail server is mail.umd.edu, check the box My Server Requires Authentication.
    NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.

  7. Click on the Advanced tab
  8. If your outgoing mail server is mail.umd.edu, in the Advanced tab, make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked for Outgoing mail (SMTP).
    NOTE: Leave this un-checked for WAM, Glue or Deans.
  9. Incoming mail (IMAP): make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked for Incoming mail (IMAP).
  10. Do not change the default port numbers
  11. At the bottom of the Properties window, click Apply and then OK

  12. You will now see the account window that you originally accessed to begin setup. Click Close on this window.
