How to post to newsgroups using Pine

Pine is not recommended for reading news. For reading and posting news, you should use one of the system newsreaders, like 'rn', 'trn' or 'tin'. (The 'tin' newsreader is discussed in the handout Getting Started With Your WAM Unix Account.)

There is also information available on the other supported newsreaders.

First, you need to configure Pine to be able to see the newsgroups at all. To check this, get into Pine and choose Folder List from the main menu. If you get two areas, a Folder-collection and a News-collection, you have the ability to get to news. If you don't see both areas, go back to the main menu (M), then type 'S' (Setup), then 'C' (Configure). You'll be placed in a list of options you can change in Pine, the seventh item being news-collections. This will probably have the value <No Value>. To change this, type 'A' (Add), then type:

  • For Glue systems: *{news.umd.edu/nntp}[]
  • For the WAM system: *{news.wam.umd.edu/nntp}[]

Then type 'E' (Exit) to get out of the configuration screen, answer Yes to the question about saving the changes.

Note: Enter the string exactly as shown above; simply putting the correct news server in the field will NOT enable Pine to post news to that server. (If you don't do it right Pine will probably give you some sort of warning.)

Once you've done this, when you choose Folder List from the main menu, you will see two sections, Folder-collection and News-collection. Press the down arrow to go to the News-collection area, where [ Select Here to See Expanded List ] should be highlighted. If you press Enter here, you should get a list of the newsgroups you have access to. Use the arrow key(s), the 'W' (Whereis) command to locate/highlight the group you're interested in and press Enter to get into the group, or use the 'G' (Goto) command to take to a specific group and automatically enter it.

To be able to post an article in a group, you need to make sure Pine is set up to allow this. To check and enable this (if you haven't done it previously), from the main menu type 'S' (Setup), then 'C' (Configure). You'll be placed in a list of options you can change in Pine, the fourth item being nntp-server. This will probably have the value <No Value>. To change this, type 'A' (Add), then type:

  • For Glue systems: news.umd.edu
  • For the WAM system: news.wam.umd.edu

for the nntp server name. When you press enter, this string should replace the <No Value>. Once you've done this, type 'E' (Exit) to get out of the configuration screen, answer Yes to the question about saving the changes, then you'll have to quit and re-start Pine to have it see the news stuff.

To post an article in a group, type 'C' (Compose) while in the group - it will ask you whether to post to the current newsgroup (answer 'yes'), then you will be dropped into the editor in your post. Fill in the subject and body, then use Ctrl-x to send (post) your item.
