Subscribing to a Course Mail List

To subscribe yourself to a Course mail list, simply send mail with the subscribe command to the list management e-mail address. If you know the name of the list, you can subscribe yourself to that list by sending an e-mail to the administrative e-mail address: majordomo@coursemail.umd.edu with no subject, and the subscribe command in the body:

  subscribe list_name email_address

where list_name is the name of the list to which you want to subscribe, and email_address is the e-mail address under which you wish to be subscribed.

After subscribing to the list, you should receive an e-mail from majordomo@coursemail.umd.edu which contains text similar to this:

A request has been made that your email address be added to or deleted from the mailing list "list_name@coursemail.umd.edu."

To confirm you subscription request please mail the following line, and only this line, exactly as shown, to "Majordomo@coursemail.umd.edu":

  auth password subscribe list_name email_address

followed by some more explicit directions. All you need to do is to reply to the e- mail, and remove everything except the auth line, and send that back to the server. In return mail you should see a confirmation and/or a welcome message for the list.

Note: If the list is set up as a closed list, when you send the initial subscribe mail you will not receive any response directly from the Course mail server. In this case, requests are forwarded to the list owner (the instructor) for them to approve (or not). If you want to determine the status of such requests, you'll have to send e-mail to the owner of the list at the address:

  owner-list_name@coursemail.umd.edu

asking them the status of the subscription request.

The class instructor can also subscribe you to the list, so if you have any problems following this procedure, you can contact them to get on the list.
