How often should you check your mail?

It's convenient to have the list of what is in your inbox refreshed every now and then to let you know that new mail has arrived since you last grabbed it. You can ask the POP program to check your mail every so many minutes.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages to doing this:

  • There will probably be occasions when you want to do some mail composing first, "offline", before connecting to the server to send the mail you've written and get any new mail. Having the program set to check mail every so often will deny you control of this.
  • Some systems (particularly WAM) are sensitive to too-frequent checking of mail, and there have been times when serious corruption of mail inboxes has happened due to this problem.

In short, there are some serious issues of control involved. Given that you can easily ask your program to check mail any time you're curious, consider the "NEVER" choice rather than selecting a number-of-minutes interval for automatic checking of mail.
