Note: We recommend using IMAP.
When the POP mail program (Mozilla Thunderbird, Eudora, etc.) you are
using tells the POP mail server on the e-mail service that you use
(TerpConnect/Glue, etc.) to transfer your mail, the question arises
whether you want the mail moved down to your
local machine, leaving no trace on the server, or you want it
copied -- meaning that a copy of each item
transferred to your local machine stays on the server.

Moved
|
"removed from server"
|
no need to manage (clean up) mail left on the server
|
the ONLY copy of your mail will be on your own machine --
you won't be able to take a look at it from any other
machine you might find it convenient to use.

Copied
|
"left on server"
|
unless you remember to monitor and clear your inbox on
the server, mail will accumulate there -- a large inbox
-
may create quota problems
-
makes mail retrieval slower
-
is at greater risk of getting corrupted, making it
impossible to retrieve new mail
|
you'll be able to see your mail from other computers --
but you could also do that even better using an IMAP
program.

Managing mail left on the server - If you
use TerpConnect/Glue, you will find it easy to
manage (clear out) your inbox on the server by SSHing to
your account, running Pine, and using Pine's
SELECT and APPLY
commands to get rid of large chunks of related mail
easily, in seconds.
