The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has installed a UNIX based anti-virus software on the Glue mail system. The software is called
Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV) and its purpose is to scan attachments for incoming and outgoing e-mail including archives and compressed files.
When the software detects a virus in a message, the entire e-mail is deleted. Mail is then sent to the intended recipient indicating that it's been
deleted but will include the headers of the original e-mail. This way, the intended recipient can contact the sender to notify them: a) the
sender's computer may have a virus and b) to let the sender know their e-mail was not received.
Further documentation of this program can be found at http://www.clamav.net/.
