Alumni Extended E-mail Forwarding Address

The University of Maryland offers an extended E-mail forwarding address service to University Alumni. This service was offered beginning with the graduating class of May 2005 and is available to all future graduates of the University of Maryland.

About E-mail Forwarding Addresses

An E-mail forwarding address is an electronic address that re-routes mail to a specified e-mail system designated by its user. Since most people change e-mail systems with some frequency, the e-mail forwarding address provides a publishable address that stays the same even though your e-mail system may change. Using a forwarding address can keep you from ever having to change your published address.

About the University of Maryland E-mail Forwarding Address

University E-mail forwarding addresses are formed by combining a person's University Directory ID with the University's internet domain.

Directory IDs

The University of Maryland maintains a Directory look-up that stores address information for students, faculty, staff and affiliates of the institution. Each person in the Directory has a Directory ID. As a student, you selected your Directory ID at the time of admission and used it throughout your experience at Maryland. Directory IDs are used to log-in to most electronic services for students, including Testudo (www.testudo.umd.edu). They can be up to 8 characters and must be unique. The default Directory ID is the first initial of your first name, followed by the first seven characters of your last name.

If you do not know your Directory ID you can discover it by using the ID Discovery Tool

The Alumni Association's Email Forwarding Service

Graduates from the class of May 2005 and before are eligible to establish an e-mail forwarding service with a terpalum.umd.edu domain (for example, yourname@terpalum.umd.edu). For more information, contact Patrick Beasley at 301-405-7766.

Routing E-mail from your forwarding address to your E-mail account

In addition to maintaining your e-mail forwarding address, the Directory has a field that stores your current e-mail address information. When the forwarding e-mail address receives email, it reads this field and forwards it to that location.

You must keep this field up to date. You can do this by using the Testudo web-site: www.testudo.umd.edu.

Using your E-mail Forwarding address

Your e-mail forwarding address provides an easy way to publish a single electronic address. If you ever change e-mail systems, simply return to Testudo and update your mail address field with your new address. This eliminates the need to notify friends and colleagues of an e-mail address change - they can continue sending to your forwarding address and it will route to the new address you put in Testudo.

For many alumni this is the same address you used as a student - just continue using it. It provides a great way to keep in touch with your fellow classmates from the University of Maryland and provides an easy solution to e-mail addressing.
