Log Off of Any Computer You Have Been Using in the Computer Labs

Close your programs, remove your disks, and log off the computer in the labs after you are done using them.

For you own privacy and security you must log off of any computer you have been using in the computer labs on campus. The following is a short checklist to help you make sure you don't forget to do anything.

  1. Save any documents you have been working on.
  2. Close all programs.
  3. Remove any floppy disks, Zip disks, or CDs you were using.
    • Windows: Wait until the green light on the drive is off then press the eject button on the drive.
    • Macintosh: To remove your diskette (or Zip disk) simply drag it to the Trash (don't worry, it won't delete anything!) On the Macintosh G3s (usually blue and white in color) in the labs, you will have to push the eject button on the floppy drive to kick the disk out manually after dragging it to the trash.
    • Unix (Sun SparcStation): To eject a disk, move your cursor to an X-Term window and type the command eject floppy.
  4. Log off of the computer:
    • Windows and Macintosh: Click on the logout or logoff button icon on the desktop and wait till you see the log-on screen before you leave the computer.
    • Unix (Sun SparcStation): There are a variety of ways to logoff of a SparcStation. The easiest way is to type logout at the Unix prompt in an Xterm window (note: if you have used the Xterm window to telnet or r-login to another machine, you may need to type in logout twice - once for the remote session, once for the local machine).

If your computer crashes or stops responding while logging off, please ask for assistance. Many computer labs have a technician on duty who can help you (example: the WAM labs have people called First-Aiders, usually located in the front of the lab or in the office in the lab).
