How do I access the Unix shell in my WAM / Glue Account?

Important:

All of the following directions are assuming the initial step of your computer being connected to the internet. If your machine is not connected to the internet, or you do not have internet access, then connecting to the remote host will fail.

To connect to the remote hosts, like WAM or GLUE, on campus you must use ssh. SSH sends all information, like your username and password, encrypted over the network. This cuts down on the chances that your information could be snooped. The telnet service has been discontinued.

From a Microsoft Windows Machine (9x, NT, 2000, XP):
  1. You'll need an SSH client program. We recommend Tera Term Pro or F-Secure .
  2. Some example site names are:
    • wam.umd.edu
    • glue.umd.edu
From a Macintosh Machine:
  1. Mac OS X comes with a built-in terminal application that does support SSH. To connect, open the terminal application, then type ssh site-name.
From a UNIX Machine:
  1. Open an XTerm window.
  2. Once the XTerm window is up type in slogin site name. Some example site names are:
    • wam.umd.edu
    • glue.umd.edu
If you do not have access to a computer
  1. There are several WAM labs around campus. With a WAM account you will be able to log in to the computers, and these will give you access to your account.
