In Word, the triangle markers at each end of the ruler set the indention
levels from the current margin. The one on top at the left side sets the
first line indent for the paragraph and the bottom one sets the indention
for the rest of the lines. If the bottom one is moved, the top one will
also be adjusted to the same relative location. The marker on the right
sets the indention level from the right margin. In the Word Perfect ruler,
the left indent marker is the triangle in the bar with the inch markers.
This marker only sets the indention for the first line. To get effects
such as hanging indents or block quotes (left/right indent), select
Font->Paragraph->Format the Windows version, or the options under the Insert
menu item on the Mac. With the flexibility of these options, the margins should
never be changed for local formatting. The only time that the margins would have
to be changed is if there are going to be different logical sections within
the document.
For both applications, to place a tab stop, just click along the ruler
at the location that one needs to be added. To change the type of tab stop
(left, right, center, decimal, etc) after it has been set, double click
one of the tab stops. Removing a tab stop is done by dragging it off the
ruler. In all of the versions the default type of tab stop can be set by
hitting the button, either on the ruler or the toolbar, that has the same
symbol as the tab stop.
