Enabling The Windows XP Firewall

A firewall is a security measure which creates a protective boundary or wall between a computer and the Internet, to protect the computer from unauthorized access. Windows XP includes Internet Connection Firewall software that can be used to restrict the connections made from the Internet to your computer. Here are the steps for enabling this firewall:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel

  2. Locate the Network Connections item. Double-click on Network Connections.

  3. The Network Connections window will open. It will list all of the network connections available. Select the network connection that you want to enable the firewall for, i.e. the network connection you use the most. Click on it using the right mouse button and select Properties in the menu that will pop up.

  4. In the Properties window select the Advanced tab, then click the Settings button.

  5. The Windows Firewall window appears showing the General tab

  6. Click ON (recommended)
