NOTE:
Before you follow the instructions for creating a
network connection, check
the following pieces of hardware.

Make sure the network cord fits snug in the wall
jack and in the network card itself.

Turn your computer on and make sure the cord is plugged in.
- Check to make sure a green light is lit up on the back of the
network card. If you do not see a green light, try switching the
cord with a new one.

Make sure the network card has correct drivers loaded.
- Click Device Manager for step-by-step
instructions if you do not know how to check your driver.
Create a Network Connection

Click on Start.
- Highlight All Programs.
- Scroll up to
Accessories and then to
Communications.
- Click on the New Connection Wizard. The
New Connection Wizard window will open. This wizard will
help guide you in creating a new connection.

- Click Next to proceed. The New
Connection Wizard - Network Connection Type
window allows you to select the network connection type. By default,
Connect to the Internet is already chosen for you.
- Click Next to
proceed. The New Connection Wizard - Getting
Ready window allows you to select how you would like to connect
to the Internet.

- Click the second radio button located to the left of
Set up my connection manually.
- Click Next to proceed. The New
Connection Wizard - Internet Connection window allows you to
choose how you physically connect to the Internet.

- Click Connect using a broadband connection that is
always on.
- Click Next to proceed.

Click Finish. This will create your
connection. Now with your connection created, you must make sure all
the settings are correct.
- Begin by clicking on Start and highlight All
Programs.
- Scroll up to Accessories and then to
Communications.
- Click on Network Connections. The Network
Connections window will pop open.

- Locate the connection that you have just created
under the category LAN or High-Speed
Internet.
- Right click once on the connection and
select Properties. The Local Area
Connection Properties window will open and the
General tab is opened by default.

- Make sure your network card is
displayed in the Connect using: box.
- Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Click the Properties button. The
Internet Protocol Properties (TCP/IP) window allows the
user to configure specific network settings.

- Click Use the following IP address: radio
button. Next to IP address:, Subnet mask, and
Default gateway:, You will find a string of numbers
provided by the Network Operations Center (NOC).
- Enter the string of numbers. If you need help finding these numbers:
- Locate your network jack in your room/office.
- Note the number
- Enter these numbers in NOC site
- log in
- Follow the instructions.
- Click Use the following DNS server
addresses once you have located and entered in these
numbers.
- Enter in the following numbers: Preferred DNS
server: 128.8.74.2 and for the Alternate
DNS server: 128.8.76.2.
- Click the
Advanced button. NOTE: The
Advanced TCP/IP Settings window will open and the
IP
Settings tab is opened by default. The IP
addresses category should include the IP address and Subnet mask
address you entered in step 20. The Default gateways:
category should include the gateway address you entered in step 20.

- Click the DNS tab.

- Make sure the DNS numbers are shown in
the DNS server addresses category. UNCHECK
Register this
connection's addresses in DNS. All other settings
stay the same.

- Click the WINS tab In the Advanced
TCP/IP Settings window.

Enable LMHOSTS lookup should be checked and under
the NetBIOS setting,
Default is checked.
- Click
OK to save changes and exit
Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
- Click
OK to save changes and exit
Internet Protocol <TCP/IP>
Properties. Now look at your desktop.
- Open Internet Explorer and the University of
Maryland's Network Registration Page should appear.
- Follow the instructions to register your jack.
