Ethernet Cards To Use In The Dorms

The question often arises:

Is there a preferred ethernet card for using a PC-compatible computer in the dorms at UM?

The preferred card for a relatively recent PC is a:  3Com PCI 10/100 TP (twisted pair) Ethernet card.

For older machines that don't have PCI buses,  replace PCI with ISA.

For information on specifications recommended by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk staff for both PC and Mac desktop and laptop models,  please see

http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/general/minimum_recommendations/

Please remember that these specifications do not represent the absolute minimum for a computer to be usable now at UM.  Rather,  they are the specifications that will make a computer serviceable for a UM education over the next several years,  in the opinion of the OIT Help Desk staff,  based on what they've observed of both usage on campus and changing requirements brought on by changes in the computer industry.
