Installing StarOffice in TerpConnect

This page will walk you though configuring StarOffice on your TerpConnect (powered by Glue) account.

  1. StarOffice will use about 2 Megabytes of your TerpConnect account quota for configuration and customization files. Before you proceed with this installation, you should check on your account to ensure that you will have the necessary space. To do this, consult the following steps:
    1. Run the command to check your current quota by typing

      quota

at the command prompt. You will see output similar to below:
Volume Name Quota Used %Used Partition
      h.glue.userid 1000000 50000 50%
    2. Be very careful in deciding whether you have enough space to install StarOffice. If your "% used" is greater than 95%, we suggest that you free some space before installing the configuration files.
    3. If you feel that you have sufficient space, proceed with the installation instructions.
If you need help freeing space, please call the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk for assistance.

  2. From the prompt in your TerpConnect account, you will first need to alert the system that you are going to call StarOffice by typing

    tap staroffice8

  3. The system will display some information for you, and you are now ready to begin the installation. To start the process, type

    soffice

  4. At this point, StarOffice will launch a graphical install program for you. The system staff at the university has configured the installation program so that all you need to do is to accept the default options on each screen.

  5. When the program asks for you to enter all of your personal information, this option is up to you. It is not necessary for you to do so.

  6. After the installation program has completed, you can now run StarOffice. This can be done by typing again at the prompt

    soffice

  7. In the future, to start StarOffice, you need to issue the following two commands

    tap staroffice8
    soffice
