Viewing URLs with External Browsers in Alpine

Alpine offers the feature of viewing URLs sent within a message body. This feature allows you to launch a web browser from Alpine which will load the selected URL.

Use the following procedure to make Alpine acknowledge links and open a browser.

  1. Launch Alpine
  2. Hit the S key for Setup
  3. Hit the C key for Config
  4. Under the Viewer Properties menu select enable-msg-view-urls
  5. Hit the X key to mark the box next to the selection
  6. Do the same for enable-msg-view-web-hostnames
  7. Now go to the last item in the Config page entitled url-viewers
  8. Hit Enter
  9. Now enter the path to a web browser such as "/usr/local/bin/lynx _URL_"

Now when you open a mail message with a URL in it, you will be able to select that URL with the arrow keys and open it in lynx or whatever web browser that you specify.
