Microsoft Outlook 2003 can be configured to
access the university Directory service, allowing you to search for
contact information for University of Maryland, College Park faculty and
staff.
- In the Outlook menu bar, click on Tools and
then E-mail Accounts.
- In the window that appears, choose Add a new directory
or address book and then click the Next button.
- In the next window, choose Internet Directory Service
(LDAP) and then click on the Next button.
- In the next window, enter directory.umd.edu
in the Server name box. If you want to be able to
also search for students using the directory, put your Directory ID and
password in the Logon Information box at the bottom of this
screen. Then click on the More Settings
button. You will get a warning that you will have to restart Outlook
before this new directory service will work--just click
OK to proceed.
- A window with the title Microsoft LDAP
Directory will appear. Click on the Search
tab. In the Search base box, type
dc=umd,dc=edu (as shown below). Click on the
Apply button and then the OK button.
- You will return to the previous window. Simply click
Next, and then click Finish in the last
window.

When you restart Outlook, choose Tools from the
menu bar, then choose Address Book
- When the Address Book window appears, click on the Find Items
tool icon (the 2nd one from the left).
- In the Find window that appears, put in
information about the person you want to search for, such as the last
name, and then click OK to conduct the search.
- The results will be listed in the Address Book
window. Double-clicking on one of the names in the list will bring up
more detailed information about the person, and will present you with the
option of adding that person to your Personal Address Book.
