In Mac OS X Leopard, you can configure the Addressbook application in
conjunction with
the Mail application to use the University Directory service to find the
correct e-mail address for a faculty/staff member of the university when
you are composing an e-mail message. To do this, follow the steps
below:
Launch Addressbook. On the menu bar, click on Addressbook,
then choose Preferences.

In the preferences window, click on the LDAP icon.

Click the plus sign in the lower left corner.
In the window that appears, type in the following
information:
- Name: UM Directory
- Server: directory.umd.edu
- Search Base: dc=umd,dc=edu

Click the Save button in the lower right hand corner.
The new active server will appear in the window. Click the red
button
in the upper left corner to close the window.
Addressbook and Mail are now set up to use the Directory
service.
To begin using the service, start a new e-mail message. Type in the
full name of the University person you are searching for in the To:
field. Start composing your message. After a few moments, the UM
Directory
will answer Mail's request for information about that person, and the
name you entered will be replaced by the name and e-mail address of that
person.
