Configuring Mac OS X 10.4 Mail To Access The University Directory

In Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, you can configure the Address Book application in conjunction with the Mail application to use the University Directory service to find the correct e-mail address for university faculty/staff when you are composing an e-mail message. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch Address Book from the Applications Folder.
  2. On the menu bar, click on Address Book, then click on Preferences.

  3. In the preferences window, click on the LDAP icon.

  4. Click the plus sign in the lower left corner.

  5. In the window that appears, type in the following information:

    • Name: UM Directory
    • Server: directory.umd.edu
    • Search Base: dc=umd,dc=edu

  6. Click the Save button in the lower right hand corner. The new active server will appear in the window

  7. Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the window.

  8. Address Book and Mail are now set up to use the Directory service.

To begin using the service, start a new e-mail message. In the To: field, type in the full name of the University person for whom you are searching. Start composing your message. After a few moments, the UM Directory will answer Mail's request for information about that person, and the name you entered will be replaced by the name and e-mail address of that person.
