On Saturday, February 2, 2007 at 11:00 p.m., the Oracle Calendar server
was upgraded with the new Daylight Saving Time rules. As a result of the date
changes, events which were previously scheduled to start between the new and
old Daylight Saving Time start dates, and between the new
and old Daylight Saving Time end dates, may appear one hour
later than intended.
Any affected events must be manually adjusted in order to
restore their former start times.
New Daylight Saving Time Rules
Prior to 2007, Daylight Saving Time began on the first Sunday in April
and ended on the last Sunday in October.
Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time begins on the second Sunday in
March and ends on the first Sunday in November.
How Daylight Saving Time Affects Oracle Calendar
Because of the way that Oracle Calendar stores event information
without maintaining time zone information; the change in Daylight Saving
Time makes some events in Oracle Calendar appear to start one hour later
than expected.
For example,
- Before February 2, 2007 at 11:00 p.m., an event was created under the old Daylight Saving
Time rules to occur on March 30, 2007 at 1 p.m.
- The New Daylight Saving Time Rules are applied to the calendar system.
- The March 30, 2007 event will now be displayed as starting at 2 p.m.
This change affects events which were scheduled before February 2,
2007, and which take place during the interval between Daylight Saving
Time's old and new start dates, and between the old and new end dates.
Those intervals for upcoming years are:
| Year |
Affected Spring Dates |
Affected Fall Dates |
| 2007 |
March 11 - April 1 |
October 28 - November 4 |
| 2008 |
March 9 - April 6 |
October 26 - November 2 |
| 2009 |
March 8 - April 5 |
October 25 - November 1 |
| 2010 |
March 14 - April 4 |
October 31 - November 7 |
Adjust Any Affected Events
Due to the way Oracle Calendar stores events, affected events must be
manually adjusted to match their proper start time. To do so,
event creators must log into
Oracle Calendar and navigate to the affected date ranges. If an event's
start time is incorrect, drag the individual event
to its proper start time.
To assist in this process, there will be an e-mail sent to
all creators of events scheduled during the affected dates listing
meetings that might have incorrect times. In addition, a calendar Daily Note
will be posted each day with information about any meetings that may be affected.
(The display of notes on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) will vary depending on the device.)
Older desktop clients might not be able to display the details of a note; if
this is the case either upgrade your desktop client
or use the Web Client https://calendar.umd.edu/.
NOTE: Tasks will not be listed, you must
review these to make sure they are as you intended.
For Resource owners (accounts associated with reserving conference and class
rooms):
Only Daily Notes will be posted to the calendar since we cannot extract
details on the "organizer" of the meeting. If your current desktop client cannot display note details,
you will need to
upgrade.
