Windows Include / Exclude

Basic Include/Exclude lists and retention policies are pushed down to each client based upon your specified Operating System.

Each system also gets a default retention policy. You can view the available retention polices in the Backup-Archive GUI:

  1. Open the Tivoli Storage Manager "Backup-Archive GUI"
  2. Select the "Utilites" Menu
  3. Select "View Policy Information"

The available policies are displayed in the drop down list. The pane below shows the retention times for each option. TSM allows for multiple policies to be in use on a single client as needed. You may use the "Backup-Archive GUI" to specify different retention needs. This will also allow you to encrypt data for security purposes.

  1. Open the Tivoli Storage Manager "Backup-Archive GUI"
  2. Select the "Edit" Menu
  3. Select "Preferences"
  4. Select the Include-Exclude tab

Because this tab allows for a wide variety of options, we will only cover the most basic functions. Additional information can be obtained by clicking the help button at the bottom of the window.

  1. Select the category "Backup"
  2. Select the type. The most commonly used options are as follows:
    1. Exclude: Excludes the specified file or directory from nightly operations.
    2. Include: Includes the specified file or directory for nightly operations. This is useful for changing retention policies.
    3. Include/Exclude extensions: The is a wide variety of optional extensions. For standard backups, extensions to the include/exclude types are not always necessary, but here is a quick description of them:

.Backup: Processing only applies to backups. Ignored during archive operations

.Compression: Compression is enabled by default. You may choose to exclude compression if needed.

.Dir: Only available on Exclude because everything is included by default. This applies to subdirectories as well.

.Encryption: Encrypts the file before sending it to the server. Please note, if encryption is used, you must keep track of your password. Data cannot be recovered without it and we do not keep it on file. If your password is lost, we can reset your password but all encrypted backups will be unusable.

.File: For specifying individual files or patterns.

.Systemobject: For Windows systems only. Useful for changing Management Classes of Systemobject backups.

.SystemServices: For Windows 2003 only. Useful for changing Management Classes of SystemServices backups.

.SystemState: For Windows 2003 only. Useful for changing Management Classes of SystemState backups.

  3. Optional: At this point, you may select a Management Class to change retention requirements. If this field is left blank, the default class is used. Please be aware that setting shorter or longer retention policies will take effect during the next scheduled backup.
  4. Select the a location or pattern that defines your needs. Wildcard charaters are acceptable.
  5. Click the Add button. This will save the specified options to the list on the right.
  6. Finally, verify the list on the right.
