Windows Client Install

  1. Download and install the latest client and system files from http://www.backups.umd.edu/software/. There is no need to reboot.
  2. Start the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive GUI from the start menu.
  3. A TSM Client Configuration Wizard message should appear. Click Next. If the window does not appear, it means you have configured TSM previously. To continue with these steps, do the following:
    1. In the main TSM GUI screen, select utilities and then click on Setup Wizard.
    2. In the TSM Client Configuration Wizard window, click the box labeled Help me configure the TSM Backup Archive Client and click Next.
    3. You will then have the option to update your existing dsm.opt options file. Proceed to the next step.
  4. Once in TSM Client Configuration Wizard window, you will either be updating your options file or creating a new options file.
  5. Follow the next steps to configure the client:
    1. The node name will be the same as the machine name you specified on the Node Registration Form or as confirmed by the TSM Administrators. Type in your given node name and click Next.
    2. The client will talk over TCP/IP, click Next.
    3. The server address is tivoli.umd.edu. The port number is 1500. Click Next.
    4. The default include/exclude lists should be left as is for a normal client.
    5. Select any desired exclusions for the listed extensions. Click Next when done.
    6. Check the box Back up all local file systems to backup every filesystem local to the host. If this is not desired, select the filesystems in the Domain List box that you would like to backup and click Next.
    7. Click Finish and the Wizard will prompt you for the password for your node to initially authenticate. Type in the password and click Next to authenticate to the TSM server. You will exit to the main screen indicating that the client authenticated correctly.
  6. Most clients will run on a server initiated schedule. To configure the daemons that need to run on the host for scheduled backups, perform the following steps:
    1. In the main TSM Client GUI Screen, select utilities, select Configuration Wizard.
    2. Once in the TSM Client Configuration Wizard screen, check the box labeled Help Me configure the TSM Client Scheduler Click Next.
    3. Ensure the Install a new or additional scheduler radio button is checked.
    4. Name the scheduler TSM Client Scheduler
    5. Use the local machine for the scheduler. IMPORTANT: check the box labeled Use the Client Acceptor Daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler. Click Next.
    6. Name the TSM acceptor TSM Client Acceptor Daemon. Click Next.
    7. The default options file (C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsm.opt) should be used. Click Next.
    8. The port 1581 is acceptable. Click Next.
    9. Verify the node name is correct. Leave the Password field blank. Leave the check box labeled Contact the TSM Server to Validate Password unchecked. Click Next.
    10. The system account should be fine for use by the scheduler. IMPORTANT: Make sure the radio button for Automatically when Windows boots is selected. Click Next.
    11. The default log files should be used. They reside in "C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient". Click Next.
    12. Click Next to start the service upon completion of the wizard.
    13. Click Finish and the client will try to authenticate to the TSM server using the password supplied in step h. If errors occur, please contact backups-help@umd.edu for assistance. Upon successful completion a box with the wording Scheduler service successfully installed should appear.
  7. Once this is completed, you are now ready to begin backup/restore operations. Please continue to the Backup/Restore Documentation.
