Downloading and Installing VirusScan for Mac 8.6

This file is a licensed version that is only available to current students, faculty, and staff of the University Of Maryland.(NOTE: If you do not have a University Of Maryland Certificate, you will be prompted to get one.) You will be asked to enter your Directory ID and password. This information is only used to check your association with the University.

Before installing VirusScan for Mac 8.6, verify that you have installed and are running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.6 or later) or Mac OS X Leopard (version 10.5 or later). Do not install this software if you are running Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or less; use Virex 7.7 instead.

  1. download the installer first.
    Note: Please see this page for further information if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Mac.
  2. Double-click on the downloaded file VirusScan 8.6.dmg to mount the image, if it is not already mounted. The file will expand and it will create an installer package called VirusScan.pkg.
  3. Double-click on the file to install it.The installer will appear. A pop-up window will appear and ask to use a program to determine if the software can be installed.

  4. Click Continue. A welcome message will appear.
  5. Click on Continue.
  6. Read the release notes which include system requirements and make sure that your computer is capable of running VirusScan for Mac 8.6. (NOTE: you need at least Apple OS X version 10.4.6 to install VirusScan for Mac 8.6.)
  7. Click on Continue.

  8. Read the license agreement and click on Continue. A sheet will come down.

  9. Click on the Agree button. The VirusScan is installed.

  10. Select the drive where you want to install the VirusScan 8.6 software. After you click on the drive, click on the Continue button.

  11. Click on the Install button.

  12. You will now be prompted to type in the administrator password for your computer. Type in the user name and password for an account with Administrator rights and click OK.

  13. A screen stating that The software was successfully installed will appear. Click the Close button.
