If you use Outlook Express 5.x or 6.x to check your e-mail, you may
encounter a strange occurrence where a brand-new message arrives in your
Inbox and is marked as deleted for no apparent reason. When you click on
the message, all you see is a error message that says Message is
no longer available on the server.
This can occur when Outlook Express fails to properly synchronize its list
of your e-mail messages with the list of your messages on the mail
server. The solution is to force Outlook Express to get a new listing of
your messages from the mail server by wiping out the list Outlook Express
keeps on your computer. The process is as follows:
-
In Outlook Express, right-click on the mail folder that contains
the e-mail message that you cannot read (the "Message is no longer
available on the server" message). From the pop-up menu that appears,
choose Properties.

-
In the properties window that appears, click on the Local
File tab, and then click on the Delete
button. When you are asked if you are sure that you want to do this,
click Yes.

-
After a few moments, all of the messages contained in that folder
will seemingly vanish as the local list of messages is deleted--this is
perfectly normal. Click on the OK button at the bottom
of the properties window to close it.
-
Click on another mail folder, then go back and click on the mail
folder which you just emptied. Outlook Express will rebuild the list of
messages from the server, and the message that you could not open before
should be accessible.
