How To Download And Display Images On The OIT Unix Systems

How you can display a picture on the WAM system depends upon how you're connected to it. Your possible avenues are:

1. Via a Macintosh in one of the CSC labs: To display an image on a WAM Mac, you'll first have to transfer the file to the local machine (download from WAM to Mac), then invoke a local viewer. You can download the file using the Mac "" program, located under the " File Transfer" choice from the WAM main menu. Once downloaded, you can display it by using " Panels/Fonts,DAs,Utilities/ Graphics Converters/Gif Converter" to view GIF files and " Panels/Fonts,DAs,Utilities/Graphics Converters/Jpeg View" to view JPEG format files.
2. Via a PC in one of the CSC labs: To display an image on a WAM PC, you'll have to download it to the local machine and then view it, just like on the Macs. You can download the file using "", found under " Utilities/FTP Client" Once downloaded, you can use " Menu/Windows Viewers/Lview", which will display GIF, JPEG, BMP, DIB and TGA format files.
3. Via a Sun in one of the WAM or Glue labs: To display an image on the WAM or Glue Suns, you can probably use the program 'xv'. To do so, type:
   

   xv  FILENAME
   

   where filename is the name of the image file. The 'xv' program can view many formats, including (some) PostScript, GIF, TIFF, JPEG, XBM, etc. You can also use this utility to convert between formats.
4. Via a PC/Mac logging in from home: Essentially the same procedure as when working in a WAM lab, except you may have to use different software to download the file. After that, you would invoke whatever local image utility you happen to have to view the file(s).
