Installing and Setting Up Hummingbird Host Explorer For Windows NT/2000

At this time, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends using the tn3270 web client for Vista machines.
  1. Download the Host Explorer Installation file.
  2. Double click the installation file.
  3. Unzip to the directory of your choice but preferably the default location.

  4. Click on OK once you have finished unzipping files and the installation will begin.

  5. The Hummingbird Installation Wizard will appear. Click on Next to continue.

  6. Click Yes, I agree to continue when the Hummingbird Host Explorer License Agreement appears.

  7. Select the Typical installation option after the Hummingbird installation wizard windows appears.
  8. Click on the Next button to continue.

  9. Click the Next button after the following window allows you to select the directory where the files will be stored. It is better to use the default location, as shown here.

  10. Click the Next button after you have typed the destination directory. Again the best location is the default location, as shown here.

  11. Click the Finish button to complete the setup.

    Now you will see the progress as if processes your installation.

  12. Type HEMP IU-005441 in the serial number (S/N) field and the Site Contact Name field with your name.

  13. Click Next after verifying that your information is correct at the confirmation screen. If it is correct, click the Yes button to continue. If not, click No and enter the correct information.

  14. Click on Register Later after the Online Registration screen appears and continue with the installation.

  15. Select Yes if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop. Otherwise, select No.
  16. Click the Next button after you have made your selection.

    NOTE: YOU MUST RESTART WINDOWS AFTER INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE IN ORDER TO USE THE PROGRAM FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Using the Hummingbird Host Explorer

  1. Click on the desktop shortcut or go to Start->Programs->Host Explorer in order to launch the program.

  2. Double click on the New Host Explorer Profile icon once the Hummingbird program has opened in order to create a new connection.

  3. Verify that the terminal type that is selected is 3270.
  4. Type umdmvs.umd.edu as the Host Name.
  5. Click Ok.

  6. Give the profile a name
  7. Click Save. In this case, the profile name is UMDMVS.

  8. Now your new connection will be saved in the 3270 folder within the Hummingbird Neighborhood.

  9. This is the icon that will appear.

  10. To make this icon appear as a shortcut icon on your desktop:
    • Right-click on the icon.
    • Click on Create shortcut from the pop-up menu that appears.
    • A "Browse for Folder" window will appear asking you where you want to shortcut icon to appear. Use the scroll bar on the right to scroll to the top, and click on Desktop.
    • Click on the OK button when desktop is highlighted. You should now have a shortcut icon on your desktop.
