How to post news on WAM and Glue

You have three options for posting news to a Usenet newsgroup. You can follow-up to an existing post, create a new post from within your newsreader ('rn', 'trn', 'tin' or 'xrn'), or you can use the 'postnews' utility from the system prompt.

To post from the Unix system prompt, just type:

    Pnews

and follow the directions. You'll be asked what group you wish to post to, subject, distribution (how widely do you want to propigate the article), whether you're sure you want to do this, and lastly if you wish to include a pre-written file. If you don't have a file pre-written, just press Enter and you'll be placed in whatever editor is you default editor (on WAM it's 'vi', on Glue it's 'emacs'). If you enter a filename at the prompt asking about the pre-written file, you'll then be placed im- mediately at the send/edit/abort prompt. (If you want to double-check your post, you'll need to choose edit to get into the post.) If you do edit the post, when done exit the editor as you would normally.

After that you'll be at a prompt giving you the choice of sending, editing or cancelling the post. Choose the first letter of the action you want to do. If you are ready to send the post out, just type "" and soon you'll get the system prompt again.

To post from either 'trn' or 'rn' you can refer to the OIT handout #5, " the rn Program" (available in Room 1400, Computer and Space Science, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. ). (The 'trn' program is just a superset of the 'rn' program, and when you run 'rn' you're actually calling 'trn' in 'rn' mode.) On pages 5-7 it explains how to follow-up to an article and how to post an original article. Also, if you type "?" at any point while in 'rn' or 'trn' you will get the screens of help commands; look for the "" and "" commands, as well as the "$" command. To post a follow-up to an existing article, choose either "" or "" at the end of the article and answer the questions (which will be similar to the ones asked by 'postnews' above). If you wish to post an original article, press "$" in any newsgroup, taking you to the end, then use "" to start a new article. (At this point, "" and "" are the same, since there's no previous article to follow-up to.)

To post from 'tin' at the article level (while reading in a group), you can either use 'w' to post an article or use 'f' or 'F' to follow-up to the current article ("" = copy text). To get a list of commands available, type 'h' at any point in 'tin'.
