Outlook XP and Outlook 2003 Mail Setup

The following instructions will guide you through configuring Outlook XP or Outlook 2003 to access your UM e-mail account:

  1. Open Outlook.  On the menu bar, click on Tools and then choose E-mail Accounts from the Tools menu.
  2. In the window that appears, choose Add a new e-mail account.  Click on the Next button.

  3. In the next window, you are prompted to choose the type of server to which you will be connecting.  Choose IMAP and click on the Next button.

  4. In the next window, you need to enter the following information:

    • Your name:  Type in your given name
    • Your e-mail address:  Type in your full e-mail address (ex. someone@umd.edu)
    • The incoming mail server:  Set this to the incoming mail server for your e-mail account. If your e-mail account is a:
      • Glue account, use: imap.glue.umd.edu
    • The outgoing mail server:  Set this to the appropriate outgoing mail server for your e-mail account. If your e-mail account is a:
      • smtp.glue.umd.edu
    • User Name:  Enter your e-mail ID, which is the part of your e-mail address that comes before the @ symbol (ex. the ID of someone@glue.umd.edu is someone).
    • Password:  Enter your directory password here, if you want the computer to remember your password each time you login, click the Remember password check box.

  5. Click on the More Settings button, then select the tab labeled Outgoing Server
  6. Check the box My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires Authentication
  7. Select the Advanced tab.
  8. Be sure that the item labeled This server requires an SSL-secured connection is selected for the incoming server.

  9. Click OK, then Next, then Finish.
  10. If you did not enter your e-mail password in step 4, you will be prompted to enter it now.  Outlook will begin to retrieve your e-mail, and you have successfully set up Outlook to access your e-mail account.
  11. If you are running Outlook 2003, be advised that Outlook 2003 is configured by default NOT to display any image files in the e-mail messages you receive. Instead of displaying the image, Outlook displays the following message: Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet. You can right-click on any of these e-mail messages to view the images.

    • NOTE: If you do not like this setting, you can change it by clicking on Tools on the Outlook menu bar, then choosing Options. In the Options window, click on the Security tab, and then click on the Change Automatic Download Settings button. Read the explanation about why downloading images in e-mail messages compromises your security, but if you still want to change the setting, uncheck the box next to Don't download pictures or other content automatically from the Internet, and then click OK
