OIT Recommendations Regarding Windows XP Service Pack 2

OIT has tested Windows XP Service Pack 2 with many of the commonly used applications here at the University of Maryland and has found that almost all will continue to function well after installing the Service Pack. Major security holes have been patched in this service pack and should be deemed as critical.

Based on these findings, the benefits that are obtained from the installation of Service Pack 2 warrant its use.

OIT recommends that Windows XP users should turn on the automatic update service, and allow it to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 along with any other critical updates indicated. Departmental users of Windows XP should follow the guidance of their department regarding deployment of Windows XP Service Pack 2.
