Upgrade Internet Explorer And Outlook Express To 128-Bit Encryption

The Mail@umd e-mail system relies on 128-bit encryption to secure the messages being sent to and from the Mail@umd mail server. If the versions of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express on your Windows computer are not capable of supporting 128-bit encryption, then you will probably experience problems when trying to access your Mail@umd account via Outlook Express or via the Mail@umd web client (http://mail.umd.edu).

The easiest way to tell if Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are capable of handling 128-bit encryption is to open Internet Explorer, choose Help from the menu bar, and then choose About Internet Explorer. If the encryption or cipher strength listed in the second line of text is not listed as 128-bit, then you need to implement one of the solutions listed below:

For computers running Windows 2000:

  • Download and install the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack.
  • This pack will enable 128-bit encryption in Windows 2000 for Microsoft programs such as Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, and Outlook.

If you are still experiencing problems using Internet Explorer or Outlook Express to access your Mail@umd account after you have installed the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack and restarted your computer, then upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 (Service Pack 1), which will upgrade both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to version 6, which supports 128-bit encryption.

If your computer is running Windows 98 or higher (but not Windows 2000), then you must upgrade Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to a version that supports 128-bit encryption. It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer / Outlook Express, which is Internet Explorer 6 (Service Pack 1).
