What Version of Windows am I Running?

To figure out what version of Windows you have, follow these steps:

  1. Find the My Computer icon on your desktop. It is USUALLY located in or near the upper left corner of your computer screen, and it USUALLY looks like a small computer, like these examples:

My Computer icon       My Computer icon

  2. Right-click on the My Computer icon (which means you click once on the icon with the right mouse button instead of your normal mouse button). A menu should appear like the one shown below. Choose Properties from the menu.

  3. A window will appear with the title System Properties . On the right side of this window, look for the word "System" and for the information underneath it. This will tell you what version of Windows you are running. The example below is for Windows 98.

    System: Microsoft
Windows 98

  4. If, under "System", it says:
    • Microsoft Windows 95: You have Windows 95.
    • Microsoft Windows 98: You have Windows 98.
    • Microsoft Windows NT: You have Windows NT.
    • Microsoft Windows 2000: You have Windows 2000.
    • Microsoft Windows Me: You have Windows ME.
