Using the Client

Use the VPN client whenever you need to access UMCP Internet resources or (if you use the UMCP wireless network) when you want to encrypt your Internet communications.

  1. Connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  2. Open the VPNClient by going to your Applications folder. The icon will look like the image below:

  3. The Cisco Systems VPN Client window will appear. In the Connection Entries tab, you will have 3 choices:

    • UMD: choose this option if you need to access Internet resources and websites ending in ".umd.edu" and you DO NOT need to access the UM libraries databases.

    • UMD-Wireless: choose this option if you need to access the UM libraries databases OR if your computer is connected to the campus wireless network and you are using the VPN client as a wireless security measure. Keep updated on off-campus access to library resources.

    • UMapps: choose this option if you need to access the UMDMVS mainframe.

  6. When you are done with the VPN client, click the Connection Entries tab and click Disconnect. (Note: While this will not disconnect you from the Internet, it will turn off the VPN client and may close certain Internet programs like terminal sessions.)

The first time you use the client, you should confirm that it is working properly by activating the VPN client and then visiting the following web page:

http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/cgi-bin/checkip.pl

If the VPN client is working properly, this web page will tell you that your are using an IP address in the format 128.8.xxx.xxx (where "xxx" is any number).

If you have any trouble during the installation process or while using it, contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk.
