Office of Information Technology (OIT) Usenet News Server To Be Retired

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Usenet news server (either dailyplanet.umd.edu or grapevine.wam.umd.edu), currently accessible via such programs as Thunderbird, Outlook Express, tin, trn, etc., will be retired on December 22, 2008. Usage of this service has waned in recent years, and the information resources it provides to campus are now available via other means, including FYI announcements and postings on OIT's home and Help Desk web pages. Other Usenet-related capabilities are offered at numerous network-accessible venues, a few of which are listed below:

  • http://groups.google.com/ - Google Groups provides searchable access to most of Usenet and allows for the creation of public, announce-only, and restricted groups.

  • http://news.motzarella.org/ provides free read and write access to all text newsgroups. It requires a registration that can be done online.

  • http://www.disenter.com/ lists public news servers that can be freely accessed to read and post news.

  • http://www.newzbot.com/ also provides a list of public news servers, the ability to find a server that carries a particular list, as well as general information on USENET.

Please note that OIT does not recommend or support any specific commercial or public news server. The OIT Help Desk can assist with basic configuration issues only, and cannot guarantee to be able to resolve problems related to a remote server.

If you have any questions, please contact the OIT Help Desk.
