The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk "Getting
Connected" CD contains a collection of software (anti-virus, browsers,
virtual private networking, etc.) and "how to"
information for setting up the software. It is available for free from the
OIT Help Desk any time during our open
hours.

Installing/Running McAfee Virus Scan
- Uninstall any other virus scanning programs (such as Norton
Anti-Virus) before installing McAfee Virus Scan.
- Insert the Getting Connected CD in the CD-ROM.
- Open your My Computer icon, double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
- If you have Windows 98/ME, open the McAfee Virus Scan 4.5.1 folder.
Open the Network or Dialup folder and copy the vscan451 file to your
desktop.
- If you have Windows 2000/XP, open the McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise
folder. Open the Network or Dialup folder and copy the vscan8_network.exe
or vscan8_dialup.exe file to your desktop.
- If you have Windows XP/Vista, open the McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise
8.5i folder. Open the Network or Dialup folder and copy the
vscan85_network.exe or vscan85_dialup.exe file to your desktop.
- Double-click the file you copied to your desktop; the program will
begin installing.
- On the license page, choose Perpetual in the License Expiry Type
drop-down menu. Once the installation is complete, choose the Update Now
checkbox and click Finish.
- You will be prompted to restart your computer; click reboot later.
Double-click the SDATnnnn file in the same folder as the install program
to apply updates.
- If you have internet access, restart your computer and update McAfee
Virus Scan.
- Restart your computer in Safe Mode and run McAfee Virus Scan twice or
until the program detects and deletes no infected files. To open McAfee,
go to Start, then Programs, then Network Associates, then click On Demand
Scan. Virus definition files are updated frequently, go to http://
www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/default.asp to download
the latest Super Dat File.
- If your internet access was turned off due to a virus, call the Office of Information Technology (OIT)
Help Desk, with the following information:
- Your Directory ID
- Your computer's IP address
- After completing the above steps, perform a Windows Update by clicking
on Start, then Programs, and then Windows Update.

Starting Your Computer in Safe Mode
- Turn your computer off.
- Turn your computer's power on and begin tapping the F8 key
continuously.
- You will be asked if you would like to start in Safe or Normal mode,
choose Safe mode.

Installing/Running Spybot Search & Destroy
- Insert the Getting Connected CD in the CD-ROM.
- Open My Computer, double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
- Open the Spyware folder. Open the Spybot folder and copy the
spybotsd14 file to your desktop.
- Double click the file you copied to your desktop; this will install
the program.
- Double-click on the "spybotsd_includes" file in the same folder as the
install program to apply updates.
- Shut down your computer after you install the program.
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Run Spybot Search & Destroy twice or until the program detects and
deletes no infected files.
- After completing the above steps, perform a Windows Update by clicking
on Start, then Programs, and then Windows Update.

Finding Your Directory ID
- Go to http://www.directory.umd.edu
- Click on Search for Your University Directory Entry by
UMID/SID & PIN.
- Use your UMID and PIN (old ARES or Testudo login) to search for your
Directory ID.

Changing Your Email Forwarding Address
- Students, go to www.testudo.umd.edu.
- Click on Keep your email address up to date.
- Log in with our Directory ID and password, or your SSN and pin.
- In the Email Address field, put in your directoryID@mail.umd.edu.
Then click on Update Address Information at the bottom of the
page.
- Faculty/Staff members, go to www.ares.umd.edu
- Click in the Whats New box where it says Change your official email
address and other personnel information.
- Log in with your Directory ID and password.
- In the Office Address Information section, in the Primary E-Mail
Address field, put in your directoryID@mail.umd.edu. Then click on
Update.
- Any other email address can be entered as a forwarding or primary
email address, but emails sent there will not remain on the mail.umd.edu
server.
