Junk Mail Filtering For POP Users

If you set your e-mail client (e.g., Outlook Express, Thunderbird) to use POP to download your messages to your computer, you will not be able to review your Junk Mail folder with your client. Mirapoint places the default Junk Mail folder on the server, and POP does not download any folders other than your Inbox.

Messages in the Junk Mail folder are automatically deleted after 30 days. Therefore, Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends that you review your Junk Mail folder by logging in through the Webmail interface. You can do this by going to mail.umd.edu in your browser and you will see your Junk Mail folder.

If you are a POP user and prefer not to have your Junk Mail filtered, you may turn it off by following these instructions:

  1. Log in through the Webmail interface at: http://www.mail.umd.edu
  2. Select Options in the left frame of your screen.
  3. Select Junk Mail Control at the top of your screen.
  4. Select Junk Mail Filter.
  5. In the resulting settings box, choose Off (no mail gets this filter action)

    filter off

  6. Select OK to save your settings.

You will no longer filter Junk Mail.

The OIT regrets the inconvenience to our POP users and is researching methods to provide POP users with the ability to filter Junk Mail and the ability to review it by the use of the POP protocol.
