Downloading Software Using Internet Explorer On A Macintosh

Macintosh no longer supports Internet Explorer (IE). In addition, IE has some incompatibilities with the script we use to authenticate for software downloads. What happens is that when downloading software from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Help Desk web site the name of the downloaded file becomes "software download" instead of the actual file name (i.e, Virex72.sit, or Fetch_4.0.3.sit). The file will download fine, but because it has a different file name, it might have problems opening when you double click it. Here are your options to work around this problem:

  1. Use a browser other than Internet Explorer. We have tested Safari, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, and Omniweb. Those browsers do not seem to have any problems downloading software from our web site. See the Help Desk web browser recommendations.

  2. If you plan to use IE, you can open the downloaded file called "software download" from within StuffIt Expander. To do this, open Stuffit Expander first, then click on File, and click on Expand. Choose the file you downloaded (it will be called "software download"). The file should expand normally and you should be able to continue with the installing instructions on the Help Desk web page from which you downloaded the software.
