Downloading the Client

You can download the Virtual Private Networking (VPN) client software (and the user guide and release notes, if you so wish) for Windows 2000 and XP from the links below. You will need a Directory Username and Password in order to download the software.

Version Software Download User Guide
VPN 3000 Client 5.x (Windows 2000 and XP) VPN.exe Cisco VPN 3000 Client User's Guide
VPN 3000 Client 5.x (Windows Vista) VPNVista.exe Using the VPN 3000 Client for Windows Vista

Using the Client

Use the VPN client whenever you need to access UMCP Internet resources or (if you use the UMCP wireless network) when you want to encrypt your Internet communications.

The first time you use the client, you should confirm that it is working properly by activating the VPN client and then visiting the following web page:

http://noc.net.umd.edu/cgi-bin/netmgr/whoami

...If the VPN client is working properly, this web page will tell you that your are using an IP address in the format 128.8.xxx.xxx (where "xxx" is any number).

If You Run Into Problems Using the Client

If you run into problems using the client on your system, first check the user guide and the release notes to see if your problem is mentioned in either of those documents.  If the problem you are encountering is not listed, then check our web page on known issues with the VPN client to see if you have encountered a known problem with running the client on your particular system, your particular ISP, or with your particular networking software.
